Low energy refurbishment

The aim of the project was to transform this 5 bedroom 1950s house in Gloucestershire into an eco family home. The client wanted to simplify life and reduce energy bills by bringing the house to near PassivHaus standards. They wanted the house to work for them and to respond to the way they live rather than the other way round. They also wanted to future proof the home as much as possible. Any technology which they choose to add later should be able to be installed without the need for major building work.

Customer requirements

  • Heating - efficient and low energy solution due to high thermal insulation and solar-thermal system integration

  • Hot water - multiple heating sources controlled to be as energy efficient as possible

  • Lighting - occupancy controlled lighting around the home with lighting scenes in many rooms

  • Ventilation - Control of inflow and outflow throughout the home,

  • Windows - allow for passive stack ventilation through control of velux roof windows

  • Blinds - option to add later in when client had the funds/time

  • Audio - control of multi-house audio around the communal areas.

Country living

Atlas Controls was asked to provide smart control for lighting in this residential property. The controls had to be very simple and easy to use. Any lighting presets had to be clearly distinguishable and uncomplicated to use for both the family and guests. Atlas Controls had to be able to work using the same cables and wires as the existing system so as to reduce cost and complexity. The installation needed to be done by the client’s own electrician.

Smart family home

Combining busy working lives and three children leaves little time for much else, which is why this family turned to Atlas Controls to make running their home simpler. The house is on the edge of Oxford and as well as having six bedrooms and an annexe with an additional two bedrooms it has a swimming pool and extensive gardens. The family wanted an efficient home that was safe and enjoyable to live in. The technology needed to be discreet: no wires, no clutter and no mass of remote controls.

Atlas Controls installed a full home automation system into this family home and office annex. It included lighting, heating, ventilation, access for gates, swimming pool and garden sprinklers. Integration of audio, security and solar thermal was also included in this Atamate Building Intelligence system.

Atlas Controls installed a comprehensive smart home system into this suburban Oxford home including access, heating and lighting.

The owners of this 3-bedroom maisonette were keen to improve the efficiency of their home and make it a more comfortable house to continue their retirement in. They also wanted to control the house from their other property in London. Ease of use, and hassle free maintenance were important factors for them when considering a smart home system. Particularly as this was not a primary residence, the overall automation solution had to cost effective to install and maintain. Installing an automation system needed to be completed alongside the refurbishment of the property without impacting on the project timescales.
